Day Three: Learning Hair-making

Every Child Deserves a Skill — and this weekend, our young people learned one strand at a time.

Week 2 of the Skills2Stars Summer Skills Academy continued with an exciting hands-on hair-making session, giving participants the opportunity to explore the creativity, technique, patience, and possibilities behind a skill that many see every day but may never have had the opportunity to learn.

And this was not a watch-and-learn session.

They got to work.

With mannequin heads, combs, extensions and other hair tools in front of them, participants learned by doing. They practised how to section and handle hair, worked through braiding techniques, asked questions, made mistakes, tried again, and helped one another as they became more comfortable with the process.

Across the room, you could see concentration on their faces as they worked with their hands. Some participants gathered around demonstrations to watch techniques more closely, while others worked together on their mannequin heads, exchanging ideas and figuring out their next steps.

That is exactly what Skills2Stars was created to make possible.

More Than Learning How to Braid Hair

At Skills2Stars, we believe practical skills can become much more than hobbies.

A skill can become a creative outlet. It can build confidence. It can become a side business during university. It can create employment. It can help a young person discover a talent they did not know they had.

Most importantly, learning a skill teaches a young person something powerful:

I can learn. I can create. I can build something with my own hands.

Hair-making is also a skill with cultural, creative and entrepreneurial significance. Behind every finished hairstyle are techniques that require patience, attention to detail, creativity and consistent practice.

For some of the young people in the room, this may simply become something they enjoy doing for themselves, their friends or their families. For another participant, however, today could be the beginning of a skill they continue developing for years and eventually turn into an income-generating opportunity.

We may not know yet.

And that is the beauty of exposure.

Sometimes Potential Just Needs an Opportunity

One of the beliefs behind Skills2Stars is that young people should not have to wait until adulthood to begin discovering what they are capable of.

Sometimes a child does not know they are good at photography until someone puts a camera in their hands.

They may not know they can write until someone encourages them to tell their story.

They may not know they have an eye for beauty, hair, media, baking or another creative skill until someone creates a safe environment where they are allowed to try.

That is why this program is intentionally hands-on.

We don't only want young people to hear professionals talk about what they do. We want them to experience the process for themselves.

The goal is not perfection after one class. The goal is exposure, curiosity and the confidence to keep learning.

Building the Future, One Skill at a Time

As we continue through the Skills2Stars Summer Skills Academy, every session brings us back to the same vision: empowering young people for life, one skill at a time.

The young person holding a comb today could become tomorrow's hairstylist, salon owner, beauty entrepreneur, educator or content creator.

Or perhaps they will choose an entirely different path.

Either way, they will leave knowing they were given an opportunity to explore what was possible.

And sometimes, one opportunity is all it takes to awaken something in a young person.

The future is skilled.
